In honor of the upcoming October holidays, Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, the brilliant, somewhat smelly marigold…
common name: marigold
scientific name. Tagetes erecta
In my Oakland neighborhood, marigolds are everywhere this month to celebrate the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), on November 1st and 2nd. It is a celebration of life during which individuals erect altars honoring the lives of their loved ones who have died. Marigolds are used to decorate as it is believed that the flowers’ bright colors and strong fragrance help guide the spirits to their altars.
